Productivity. Innovation. Creativity.

What do those ideas have in common? They are hard, and we try to do them alone. But to really thrive, we need people in our lives who encourage us and challenge us, who keep the faith when we lose heart, and who provide the skills, resources, and perspectives we lack. But there’s an art to cultivating that kind of relationship—and it’s one we can learn.

Anselm members joined us at the home of Brian and Christina Brown for a discussion with Diana Glyer, who has deeply studied creative community and intellectual hospitality among such groups as the Inklings (like Lewis and Tolkien).

About our Guest

Diana Glyer is the author of (among other things) Bandersnatch, which is our Arts Guild’s “Bible” on how to do creative community. Her bio from her website: “I am fascinated by C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and a group of writers known as the Inklings. By studying their work, I’ve become convinced that they were successful because they learned how to bring out the best in each other. Even more: I believe we can learn how they did it and discover how connection equips us to accomplish more than we ever thought possible. That’s why my scholarship, my teaching, and my work as an artist keep circling back to one common theme: Creativity Thrives in Community.
